Understanding the science behind chronic inflammation.

Inflammation is often spoken about as something harmful that should simply be reduced. In reality, inflammation is one of the body's most sophisticated protective responses. Without it, we could not fight infection, repair damaged tissues, or recover from injury.


The problem is not inflammation itself. The problem arises when inflammation no longer follows its natural course.


Inflammation is designed to be temporary

When you cut your finger, catch a virus, or strain a muscle, your immune system responds rapidly.

  • Blood vessels widen.
  • Immune cells are recruited.
  • Damaged tissue is cleared away.
  • Chemical messengers coordinate the response.


These changes create the familiar signs of inflammation: redness, heat, swelling and pain.

However, this is only the first part of the process. Inflammation has two equally important jobs:

  • Protection – identifying and responding to injury or danger.
  • Repair – restoring tissue structure and function.


Healthy inflammation is designed to move through both stages before returning tissues to their normal state.


The forgotten phase: resolution

Many people imagine inflammation simply "switches off."

In reality, inflammation undergoes an active, highly coordinated process known as resolution.

During this phase:

  • inflammatory signals begin to decline
  • immune cells transition from a defensive to a reparative role
  • damaged cells and debris are cleared
  • specialised pro-resolving mediators help bring the inflammatory response to an orderly conclusion
  • tissue repair and remodelling continue


Resolution is not passive. It is an essential and highly regulated part of healing.


Why can inflammation persist?

Persistent inflammation does not necessarily mean the immune system is "overreacting."

Often, inflammation continues because the body still has a reason to maintain the response.

This may occur because:

  • an infection has not been fully eliminated
  • tissue damage continues
  • repeated mechanical stress is present
  • obesity and altered adipose tissue signalling continue to promote inflammation
  • insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction sustain inflammatory pathways
  • chronic psychological stress alters immune regulation
  • autoimmune disease maintains immune activation
  • age-related changes impair normal inflammatory control


In other situations, the original trigger may have improved, but the body's ability to regulate and successfully resolve inflammation has become impaired. Persistent inflammation is therefore often driven by unresolved underlying problems, impaired regulation, or a combination of both.


How can persistent inflammation affect you?

Chronic inflammation does not always cause obvious pain or swelling. Instead, it may develop gradually and present through symptoms that are often overlooked or attributed to a busy lifestyle or simply getting older. Persistent inflammation may contribute to:

  • Fatigue – feeling persistently tired despite adequate rest.
  • Brain fog – difficulty concentrating, reduced mental clarity or forgetfulness.
  • Poor recovery – taking longer to recover after exercise, illness or injury.
  • Skin changes – including inflammatory skin flare-ups, slower wound healing or changes in skin health.
  • Stiffness – particularly on waking or after periods of inactivity, even without obvious injury.


These symptoms do not always indicate inflammation. However, when they persist or occur together, they may suggest that the body's inflammatory and repair processes are no longer functioning optimally and deserve further clinical assessment.


Health depends on successful transitions

One of the remarkable features of healthy physiology is its ability to move smoothly between different functional states. The body is constantly transitioning between:

  • defence and repair
  • activity and recovery
  • stress and restoration
  • growth and maintenance


These transitions depend upon coordinated communication between the immune system, nervous system, endocrine system, metabolism and surrounding tissues. When communication becomes disrupted, these transitions may become less efficient. Rather than progressing naturally from defence into repair, inflammatory processes may persist for longer than necessary.


Viewed in this way, chronic inflammation is often not simply "too much inflammation."

It can also represent a disruption in the body's ability to regulate, coordinate and restore healthy physiological function.
